SPECIAL LIFE® Community Impact
Camp Read A Lot
A wonderful parent had a great idea. A reading camp for children with Special Needs.
It did not take one mother very long to get others excited about the idea. All she needed was funding, a venue, volunteers & prayers. Before long it all came together.
Special Life Network provided the funding, Faith Bible Church provided the venue, and the volunteers were plentiful. "Thanks to Special Life Network our campers were able to read materials on their level. They can also access their reading materials at home on their mobile device. A great incentive to keep reading over the summer!", Leanne Trott, camp director and the mother who started it all.
This free camp is a sponsored and hosted by the Joyful Blessings Special Needs Ministry at Faith Bible Church and was designed for children with intellectual disabilities between 6 – 12 years old. Participants enjoyed the interactive fun while working on reading and language skills. The program utilized music, motor activities, and language explosion groups as well as have daily fun themes! It's so exciting to have this new program in our community.
The camp was an overwhelming success. There were 16 campers and 21 volunteers. Parents were very complimentary and appreciative of the new program. "My daughter (who seldom talks) was speaking in 3 word phrases on our way home from camp. It was like a language explosion!" expressed one mother of a camper.
Special Life Network would like to thank Leanne, Faith Bible Church and all the volunteers for their leadership and for making this new program possible.
